ZAP Surgical Systems Raises $36 Million to Scale Non-Invasive Brain Surgery

ZAP Surgical Systems has secured $36 million in financing to expand its non-invasive robotic brain surgery technology and support its global growth. The funding will help the company increase production and bring its ZAP-X® Gyroscopic Radiosurgery® platform to more hospitals, academic medical centers, and physician-led practices worldwide.

The financing was led by Catalio Capital Management, an investment firm focused on healthcare and innovative technologies. Baheal, ZAP’s strategic partner in China, also continued its support for the company.

How ZAP Surgical Systems Plans to Use the Funding

ZAP Surgical Systems plans to use the new capital to accelerate the global expansion of its ZAP-X platform and increase manufacturing capacity to meet growing demand.

The company recently shipped its 50th ZAP-X system, marking an important commercial milestone. According to the company, its technology has been used to treat nearly 10,000 patients worldwide.

ZAP-X is designed to deliver highly targeted radiation to treat brain tumors and other neurological conditions without requiring traditional invasive brain surgery. Its vault-free design also aims to reduce the infrastructure requirements associated with conventional radiosurgery systems.

ZAP-X Technology Expands Beyond Brain Tumor Treatment

Beyond its established applications in neuro-oncology, ZAP Surgical Systems is exploring new uses for its technology through an emerging approach called radiomodulation.

Radiomodulation involves using precisely targeted, low-dose ionizing radiation to influence brain function. ZAP and its research collaborators have investigated these effects in multiple mammalian brain models over the past decade.

The company has also reported preliminary findings from a first-in-human pilot study involving patients with severe treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Following these early results, broader multicenter clinical trials are being planned to investigate radiomodulation for psychiatric conditions, beginning with treatment-resistant depression and addiction.

These applications remain under investigation. Further clinical research will be needed to establish the safety, effectiveness, and potential role of radiomodulation in treating psychiatric disorders.

About ZAP Surgical Systems

Founded in 2014 by Dr. John R. Adler, a Stanford University neurosurgery and radiation oncology professor emeritus, ZAP Surgical Systems develops robotic technologies for non-invasive brain treatment.

Its flagship ZAP-X platform introduced a vault-free radiosurgery approach designed to deliver targeted radiation to brain lesions. The company is expanding its presence in the global healthcare market while exploring new applications across neuroscience.

With its latest $36 million financing, ZAP aims to increase production, expand its international reach, and advance research into potential new uses for its technology.
