Danish Biotech Samplix Raises €25M to Advance AI-Powered Drug Discovery

Danish biotech company Samplix has announced the first close of a €25 million funding round. The company develops droplet microfluidics technology that helps researchers study the functions of individual cells. This technology can support scientific research and help improve the understanding of cells.

The funding includes €3 million in new capital and €22 million in convertible bonds from existing shareholders. The round was led by WLanholding GmbH, a privately owned European investment firm, with participation from all major shareholders. Samplix is still accepting investments and aims to raise a total of €30 million.

“This investment is a further validation of the value our Xdrop platform brings to the antibody discovery community. We are now in a strong position to further scale our platform, deepen our partnerships with biopharma and academia, and continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in single-cell workflows. This is an important milestone in our mission to make drug-discovery faster, simpler, and more reliable,” said Dr. Henrik Pfundheller, CEO of Samplix.

As part of the new funding round, Dr Lanthaler, the former CEO of Evotec, is expected to join Samplix’s Board of Directors within the next year. He will work with the company’s management team to support its growth and guide its future plans.

Based in Birkerød, Denmark, Samplix was founded in 2013 to make advanced cell screening easier and more accessible without the need for specialised equipment. The company develops microfluidics technology that allows researchers to study the functions of individual cells on a large scale. Its solutions are designed for use in the biopharmaceutical industry.

Samplix’s main product is the Xdrop platform. It places individual living cells and testing materials inside millions of tiny droplets. Each droplet works like a small laboratory, allowing researchers to observe how cells behave and perform specific functions. The droplets can also be used with standard laboratory equipment to analyse and sort large numbers of cells more efficiently.

The platform supports research in several areas, including antibody discovery, immunotherapy, cell line development and genetic editing. It is used by biopharmaceutical companies and academic research institutions around the world.

Samplix says its technology aims to solve key challenges in the early stages of drug development. One major challenge is identifying cells that can target difficult proteins, particularly those found within cell membranes. By making it easier to screen and study individual cells, the company aims to help researchers identify promising candidates for further development.

“We are excited to partner with Samplix at this pivotal stage of its growth. The team has built a differentiated single-cell technology platform that solves real, persistent challenges in drug discovery. We believe Samplix is well positioned to become a category leader, and we look forward to supporting the team as they scale their impact across the industry,” said Dr. Werner Lanthaler, founder and Managing Director of WLan.

Samplix plans to use the new funding to strengthen its financial position and help more customers adopt its Xdrop platform, especially for antibody discovery. The company also sees opportunities in AI-powered drug discovery, where large amounts of data about how individual cells function can help train AI models and improve predictions.
