Aptera Motors has announced a strategic partnership with Launch Design to accelerate the production and commercialization of its solar electric vehicle.
Launch Design, formally known as Shanghai Launch Automotive Technology Co., Ltd., is a design-for-manufacturing company with more than 3,000 employees, multiple production facilities, and experience developing more than 400 vehicle models for automakers worldwide.
Partnership Valued at Up to $44 Million
The production program is valued at up to around $44 million which cover assembly fixtures and tooling, vehicle testing, pilot production and high-volume manufacturing work.
The first fixtures and production parts will support the initial 40 Aptera production vehicles, which the companies aim to begin building in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The partnership is designed to help Aptera move more quickly from vehicle development toward scaled production.
Access to Global Suppliers and Manufacturing Resources
Through the partnership Aptera will gain access to Launch Design’s international supplier network, potentially reducing the cost of sourcing components and manufacturing tools.
Launch’s supply chain is expected to provide finished vehicle subassemblies directly to Aptera’s final assembly facility in California rather than supplying individual loose parts.
This approach could help simplify Aptera’s production process as it prepares to increase manufacturing volumes.
Payment Structure Includes Aptera Stock Warrants
Under the agreement, Aptera will pay around two-thirds of approved program costs while the remaining one-third, valued at up to approximately $15 million, will be paid through warrants to purchase Aptera stock.
The structure is intended to conserve Aptera’s cash while aligning Launch Design’s financial interests with the company’s production progress.
Aptera expects to fund its share of the production program through existing capital resources, previously announced financing arrangements, and potential future debt or equity financing.
Advancing Solar Electric Mobility
Headquartered in Carlsbad, California, Aptera Motors develops a highly efficient solar electric vehicle designed to combine advances in aerodynamics, material science and solar technology.
The company’s flagship vehicle is designed to pursue higher levels of energy efficiency than conventional electric vehicles, with integrated solar technology contributing to its energy needs.
With the Launch Design partnership, Aptera is taking another step toward production as it works to build its first vehicles in late 2026 and establish the manufacturing capabilities required for higher-volume output.
