OpenAI has reportedly raised $11 billion in a new funding round that values the company at approximately $1.25 trillion. The funding is part of a larger investment round that is still underway and could reach around $20 billion in the coming weeks.
According to Bloomberg, which cited people familiar with the matter, investors have already committed the $11 billion. The report said OpenAI could secure another $9 billion before the round closes. The company had reportedly been seeking to raise as much as $30 billion in September, making the current potential total lower than its original target.
The identities of the investors have not been disclosed. Microsoft is among the possible participants, having backed several previous OpenAI funding rounds. The company’s March funding round raised $122 billion, with participation from Nvidia, Amazon and other investors.
The reported investment comes as OpenAI continues to compete with Anthropic, another major AI company that is preparing for a potential stock market listing. Anthropic is reportedly targeting a valuation of around $1.5 trillion for its IPO. However, some potential investors are said to believe a valuation closer to $1.1 trillion would be more realistic.
Both companies have recorded strong revenue growth as demand for AI products increases. Anthropic’s IPO filing reportedly showed that its quarterly revenue grew 1,127% year over year in the third quarter.
Meanwhile, the Financial Times reported that OpenAI ended the quarter with $50 billion in net annualised revenue, representing 77% growth compared with the previous year. Its enterprise business was a major contributor, with sales more than doubling.
OpenAI has also continued expanding its business and product portfolio. Its latest enterprise offering, GPT-6 Cyber, was introduced on Thursday. The cybersecurity-focused model is designed to handle advanced security tasks. OpenAI engineers reportedly used it to develop 948 Linux exploits and identify 81 high-severity zero-day vulnerabilities in Firefox.
OpenAI President Greg Brockman recently said the company experienced slower growth during the first half of the year. However, growth began accelerating following the June launch of GPT-5.6 Sol. He also highlighted the contribution of ChatGPT Work and the company’s coding tools.
The latest funding is expected to help OpenAI manage its growing infrastructure costs as it prepares for a potential IPO in 2027. The company faces significant long-term spending commitments for computing hardware and data centres. The Information previously reported that OpenAI had more than $665 billion in chip and data centre commitments.
To reduce future hardware costs, OpenAI is also working with Broadcom to develop a custom AI inference accelerator. The move is part of its wider effort to build the computing infrastructure needed to support its growing AI services.
The reported funding comes at a time when the AI investment market is facing uncertainty. Concerns about data centre expansion, possible regulatory challenges and investor expectations could influence how AI companies are valued in the coming months.
With its latest funding round still open, OpenAI could secure additional capital before the deal closes. The investment would provide further financial support as the company expands its AI products, enterprise business and computing infrastructure ahead of a possible public listing.
