ZwitterCo, a company developing advanced wastewater filtration technology, has secured a strategic investment from Ecolab, a global provider of water treatment and infection prevention solutions.
The investment will help ZwitterCo expand its water reuse technology across the food and beverage industry. The companies aim to help manufacturers recover and reuse water from wastewater streams, reduce water consumption and improve operational efficiency.
The financial details of the investment were not disclosed.
ZwitterCo to Expand Water Recycling Technology
ZwitterCo develops advanced membrane filtration solutions that help industries treat complex wastewater and recover water for reuse. Its technology uses proprietary zwitterionic chemistry, designed to improve resistance to membrane fouling caused by organic matter and other substances.
Membrane fouling is a common challenge in wastewater treatment, as contaminants can build up on filtration surfaces and reduce their performance.
ZwitterCo’s technology is designed to address this issue and make water recovery more practical for industries dealing with difficult wastewater streams.
“We are thrilled to have Ecolab as an investor and strategic partner,” said Alex Rappaport, Co-founder and CEO of ZwitterCo. “Ecolab has unmatched expertise in water treatment, digital monitoring and customer operations. Together, we can help manufacturers turn difficult wastewater streams into reusable water. This partnership is an important step toward making industrial water circularity easier to deploy, faster to scale and more valuable for customers.”
“For more than a century, Ecolab has developed solutions that help customers improve performance while protecting the resources vital to life,” said Nicolas Granucci, EVP and GM, Global Food & Beverage, Ecolab. “As food and beverage manufacturers look for practical ways to reduce water risk, we are excited to invest and collaborate with ZwitterCo to advance meaningful steps towards water circularity at scale.”
The company serves food and beverage manufacturers, agricultural businesses and industrial customers across more than 20 countries.
Ecolab Partnership Targets Food and Beverage Industry
Through the strategic investment, ZwitterCo aims to combine its membrane technology with Ecolab’s water treatment programmes, technical expertise and digital monitoring capabilities.
The partnership will focus on helping food and beverage manufacturers recover water from wastewater streams that are difficult to treat using conventional filtration methods.
Potential applications include brewing, dairy production, grain processing and protein processing, where wastewater can contain organic waste, cleaning chemicals and other challenging compounds.
By combining advanced filtration with water treatment chemistry and on-site expertise, the companies aim to help manufacturers recover utility-grade water for suitable operational uses.
Rising Water Scarcity Drives Demand for Reuse Solutions
Food and beverage manufacturers require significant amounts of water for production, cleaning and other operations. Growing water scarcity and pressure to improve resource efficiency are increasing the need for effective water recycling technologies.
Recovering water from wastewater can help manufacturers reduce their reliance on fresh water supplies, improve resource efficiency and support sustainability goals.
However, the quality of recovered water must meet the requirements of its intended use, particularly in food processing environments.
ZwitterCo’s technology is designed to help address these challenges by treating complex wastewater streams and creating additional opportunities for water reuse.
The strategic investment from Ecolab will support efforts to scale these solutions across the food and beverage sector, helping manufacturers improve water circularity while maintaining quality, safety and productivity.
