Sunlight AI Launches with $17.4M to Help Physicians Thrive Independently

Sunlight AI has raised $17.4 million in seed funding to help independent medical practices manage administrative work, improve revenue collection, and reduce operating costs while allowing physicians to retain control of their businesses.

The healthcare technology startup announced its launch alongside the funding round, which was led by Lan Xuexhao, founder of Basis Set Ventures. Other participants include Sofeon Ventures, Social Leverage, Actions Capital, Overlook Ventures, and Early Light Ventures, alongside healthcare investors, family offices, and technology founders.

The company plans to combine artificial intelligence (AI), practice-management technology, and human expertise to handle the business operations of independent medical practices. Its goal is to help physicians spend less time dealing with administrative challenges and more time caring for patients.

How Sunlight AI Plans to Use the Funding

Sunlight AI aims to build an operating platform that helps independent physicians manage the business side of healthcare without selling their practices to large corporations or hospital systems.

Independent practices often rely on five or six different vendors to manage administrative tasks, including billing, payment collection, and other operational processes. This fragmented approach can increase costs and place additional pressure on office managers and medical professionals.

Sunlight offers an alternative by bringing these functions together through a single operating partner.

The company plans to expand its services and add more businesses that support independent physicians. Bradford Medical Associates is the first of several planned acquisitions as Sunlight builds its network of healthcare service providers.

Why Independent Medical Practices Need Support

Independent physicians face increasing financial pressure from rising operating expenses and changes in healthcare reimbursement.

According to figures cited by Sunlight, practice operating expenses rose approximately 11% in 2025, while Medicare physician payment rates declined by more than 30% between 2001 and 2025.

These pressures have encouraged many physicians to join larger healthcare organizations. Sunlight cites estimates that more than 85,000 medical practices were acquired by hospitals and corporate healthcare organizations between 2018 and 2026, leaving only 18% of physicians practicing independently.

The company aims to help independent practices remain financially sustainable by reducing administrative costs, improving collections, and creating capacity to serve more patients.

How Sunlight AI Uses Technology to Improve Practice Operations

Sunlight AI is building what it describes as a patient-to-payment operating layer for independent physicians. Its platform combines practice-management infrastructure, AI technology, and human support to manage business operations.

The company focuses on three main areas:

  • Lower administrative costs: Streamlining business processes to reduce the cost associated with each patient encounter.
  • Improved payment collection: Helping practices collect more of the revenue they are owed for care delivered.
  • Greater patient capacity: Improving operational efficiency so practices can potentially serve more patients without adding the same level of administrative burden.

Sunlight also provides support for payment disputes and arbitration. The company reports that its first cohort of arbitration clients in 2026 recovered multiples of their insurers’ initial payment offers, while paying lower fees than those charged by competing providers.

These results are company-reported and may vary across practices and cases.

Who Founded Sunlight AI?

Sunlight AI was founded by Sina Chehrazi, who previously founded and led Nayya Health, a company focused on helping employees understand and use their healthcare benefits.

Chehrazi’s interest in independent medical practices is also personal. His father, Professor Barry Chehrazi, is an independent neurosurgeon who has maintained his own practice for decades and is a founding member of Sunlight’s Independent Medicine Advisory Board.

Through his father’s experience, Chehrazi observed how administrative complexity can place growing pressure on independent physicians.

His experience at Nayya Health also exposed him to the broader challenges of rising healthcare costs and the financial pressures facing employers and patients.

Sunlight AI aims to address part of this problem by helping physicians manage their practices more efficiently while maintaining ownership and control over clinical decisions.

Why This Funding Matters for Healthcare Startups

Sunlight AI’s funding highlights investor interest in technology that addresses the operational challenges of healthcare, rather than focusing exclusively on clinical tools.

Independent practices must balance patient care with billing, reimbursement, staffing, and other business responsibilities. When these tasks become too expensive or complex, physicians may find it harder to remain independent.

Sunlight’s approach combines AI with operational services to help practices access capabilities typically associated with larger healthcare organizations without giving up ownership.

The company’s next phase will involve expanding its services, adding healthcare service providers, and demonstrating whether its operating model can deliver sustainable financial benefits to independent physicians.
