Boxd Raises $2 Million Pre-Seed to Build Cloud Infrastructure for AI Coding Agents

Dutch startup Boxd has raised $2 million in pre-seed funding. The company is developing cloud computing infrastructure designed to help developers and AI coding agents build and run software more easily.

The funding round was led by BlueYard Capital. OVNI Capital, Antler, S20 and Script Capital also participated, along with business angels from General Intuition and other technology companies.

“Every AI coding agent needs a real computer to run on rather than a disposable sandbox. Current container alternatives suffer from security vulnerabilities and lose state as soon as processes complete. Boxd provides hardware-isolated persistent virtual machines that can be live-forked in milliseconds, enabling developers and autonomous agents to build, test, and deploy safely, “said Hidde Kehrer, co-founder of Boxd.

Boxd will use the pre-seed funding to grow its team and continue developing its custom virtualisation technology.

The company plans to use this technology to expand its cloud infrastructure and better support developers and AI coding agents.

Founded by Michiel Voortman, Laurentiu Ciobanu and Hidde Kehrer, Boxd is building cloud infrastructure that gives developers and AI coding agents virtual machines. These machines can be used to run code, test software and manage development tasks.

Boxd is focused on the growing computing needs of AI coding agents. These agents can work on several tasks at the same time and often need dedicated computing environments that can run for long periods.

Traditional development setups usually use separate virtual machines or containers. Boxd says these systems can become harder to manage when developers run several AI agents at once. Letting AI coding agents work without human supervision can also create security concerns.

Boxd’s platform allows teams to create as many cloud machines as they need. It also offers snapshotting and live-forking, allowing developers and AI agents to quickly create copies of running machines, including their memory and active connections, in less than 100 milliseconds. This helps multiple agents test different solutions at the same time without requiring teams to set up and manage separate development environments.
