Familiar Therapeutics Launches with $5 Million Seed Funding

Familiar Therapeutics, a biotechnology startup developing medicines for dogs and cats, has launched with $5 million in seed funding to bring advances in human medicine to companion animals.

The funding round was led by Pioneer Fund, Icehouse Ventures and BreakTHRU, a syndicate of animal-health industry leaders and veterinarians. Angel investors also participated in the round.

Founded in May 2026 by Elizabeth Iorns and Dan Knox, Familiar Therapeutics aims to adapt medicines originally developed for humans to treat diseases in dogs and cats. The company plans to work with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, license veterinary rights to existing drug candidates and lead the clinical development and regulatory process required for approval in animals.

Familiar Therapeutics Builds Pipeline of 13 Programs

Familiar Therapeutics has developed a pipeline of four lead programs and nine early-stage programs within five months of its founding. The company has also signed multiple licensing and partnership agreements with biopharmaceutical companies, opened two Investigational New Animal Drug (INAD) files with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and filed a provisional patent.

The newly raised capital will support clinical studies for its lead drug candidates and help advance the remaining pipeline.

The company’s most advanced program, FAM-010, targets hemangiosarcoma, an aggressive cancer in dogs for which there is no FDA-approved treatment. Familiar plans to begin a pilot study at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, led by Timothy M. Fan, DVM, PhD.

Its other lead programs focus on intervertebral disc disease, breathing disorders commonly seen in flat-faced dog breeds such as French Bulldogs and Pugs, and immune-mediated diseases.

“Our goal is to give vets proven, FDA-approved treatments that change the course of serious diseases in dogs and cats, where today they often have very few options,” said Elizabeth Iorns, co-founder and CEO of Familiar. “The science is often already there, and when you begin with a drug that already has years of human research behind it, the veterinary work can move much faster. Familiar is built to do that work all the way through to approval and commercialization, so those medicines can actually reach pets.”

“The science flows both ways,” said Dan Knox, co-founder and COO of Familiar. “When we develop a drug for dogs and cats with naturally occurring disease, the evidence we generate can also inform and de-risk our biopharma partners’ human programs. Those partners keep their human rights and share in veterinary sales, so they earn a faster return on research they’ve already paid for. That’s a big part of why we’ve been able to sign partners so quickly.”

“Elizabeth and Dan are two of New Zealand’s most accomplished founders,” said Robbie Paul, CEO of Icehouse Ventures. “The market for veterinary medicines is growing, and pet owners now expect the same standard of care for their animals that they get themselves. We have high conviction that Elizabeth, Dan and their team are the right people to close the gap between human and veterinary medicine, and we’re proud to have been Familiar’s first institutional investor.”

Bringing Human Medicine Advances to Animals

Familiar Therapeutics aims to address the gap between human and veterinary medicine. While drug development has advanced significantly for people, relatively few new medicines receive FDA approval for companion animals each year.

Veterinarians sometimes use human medicines off-label, i.e., dosing and safety data are not available for the species. Developing treatments for animals requires dedicated clinical studies, manufacturing processes and regulatory review.

Familiar hopes to speed up this process by building on existing human research rather than starting drug development from scratch. The company intends to pursue full FDA approval pathways for its programs and also intends to seek conditional approval where eligible, enabling some treatments to reach veterinarians while further studies of effectiveness are completed.

Founders with Experience in Leading the Business

Elizabeth Iorns, PhD, and Dan Knox, MBA, were earlier co-founders of Science Exchange, which is a research and development outsourcing marketplace, and which is utilized by pharmaceutical businesses. The founders have successfully steered the organization to get acquired in 2024.

Their interest in veterinary medicine has stemmed from the illness faced by their French bulldog named Lily in 2020 when it was detected that she was suffering from a fatal brain tumour.

Familiar’s team also includes experienced animal-health drug developers who have contributed to more than 30 FDA approvals during their careers at companies including Zoetis, Elanco and Bayer Animal Health. The company is supported by a 12-member Scientific Advisory Board comprising veterinary specialists, practising veterinarians and animal-health researchers.

Based in Redwood City, California, Familiar Therapeutics plans to use its funding and pharmaceutical partnerships to advance treatments for serious diseases affecting dogs and cats, with the goal of bringing more disease-modifying medicines to pets.
